Listen, I know that everyone is writing about the death of Steve Jobs today, and that this is one more post. But I really respected the guy, and am personally touched by his loss. In fact, if you do anything on computers at all, you should be, too. If he weren’t for guys like Jobs and Gates or women like Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, who was one of the first computer programmers and developed the idea of machine-independent programming languages, we wouldn’t be doing any of what we do today. Their contributions and those of other computer geniuses have literally changed the world.
Here’s my favorite Steve Jobs quote:
“If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.”
How many times have you been frustrated by this crazy business of ours? How many times have you thrown up your hands and wanted to give up? I know there have been those times for me. I just came through one.
I know a lot about some things and a little about others. I was blessed with an employer who made sure we all had the education we needed, no matter what it was we wanted to learn. And I worked really hard for him. But in a relationship, though it’s still good, there are factors that arise that make what you’re doing not work anymore — not in a bad way, but you just grow and things change and so, I moved on.
And I struggled for a few months to figure out what is was I wanted to do. I thought I knew, but well… That wasn’t it. When I finally figured out that I should be doing what I love to do and nothing else, things began to change for better. I’m encouraged. I’m working steadily, and well… had I quit searching and just taken another job, I’d still be in that paycheck rut. Stuck in a job, doing nothing that I love to do.
So, don’t give up. Listen to Steve Jobs and keep looking. You may be working at the wrong thing! In fact, if you’re in the “make money” niche right now, I’d encourage you to think about something else. IT’s sick. And if you’re not established and know, you’ll probably fail. But you won’t fail is you find what it is you LOVE and work on THAT niche, no matter what it is. Money comes from passion. Find your passion, but whatever you do… Never give up.
