Did you know that there’s such a thing as a bad Meta tag? Well… they’re not intrinsically evil, but they won’t help you. Spiders aren’t interested in them, and they totally waste your time. Want to know what’s not important?
Here’s the list:
- Author : Who created the page? Who cares?
- Revisit After: Spiders come and go at whim
- Abstract: Not important, even for academic sites
- Expiration date: Oh, please… pages never expire they just get ignored
- Rating: If you have nasty images on your site, you should put them into a separate directory, and let Google know you’re doing the naughty.
- Generator: Nobody gives a hoot how your page was created. Well, except if you’ve done it in Word. Then, you should be summarily executed.
There are a few more, but those are most commonly seen on webmaster newbie sites that don’t know better. The keyword tag is questionable. Google doesn’t look at it, though Yahoo may. Your call. But if you’re stressing out over what to put into those dopey Meta tags, forget it!
