SEO News Tidbits for June 7, 2010

Ah yes… It's rather a busy week. Here's some of the buzz from the world of SEO and social media:

  • Ross Dunn reports today in Search Newz that Google is going through another page rank update. There's not much you can do about it, and hopefully, you've been preparing for this day for a while, right? Is your on-page optimization cool, and how about backlinks? If you're building those, have killer content and have described and titled your pages correctly, you may see changes to your PR. However, remember that Google says that the PR you see in the toolbar isn't the same PR they use.

Does this make you as crazy as it does me? If the page rank we see isn't the real rank, then who cares?

Seriously, you shouldn't care. If you're doing all the right things, what really matters is HOW MUCH TRAFFIC ARE YOU GETTING FROM GOOGLE? That's it. Page rank doesn't mean shit and Google is pretty much telling us that by saying that their page rank doesn't jibe with ours. Double speak, people. Don't waste your time worrying about it.

  • Joshua Schachter is leaving Google. He is the creator of Deli.cio.us, and when he sold that site to Yahoo, he went to work for Yahoo and then, Google in January 2009 as an engineer and angel investor. He's ready to try something new. Hmm… Though the amount he sold Delicious to Yahoo for was undisclosed, it's been speculated to be around $30. Guess he can do whatever he wants. It will be interesting to see what comes next. He's also behind sites like geoURL and Memepool. Best of luck to Joshua!
  • According to TechCrunch, Facebook is attracting more new members than ever, even with the privacy wars of the past several weeks. Who didin't know that? Here's what Eric Shonfeld had to say about that:

"According to comScore, Facebook attracted 130 million unique U.S. visitors in May, 2010, an increase of 8.6 million people. That jump represents the third largest single-month increase in unique visitors since comScore started measuring. Pageviews were up 11 percent in May to 55.5 billion."

Pretty impressive. Let's face it, people just like to have fun and interact with their friends. Facebook came out with some adjustments to help the privacy issues that were bothering tons of folks, including the Google staff, but well… it just didn't seem to make that much difference for Facebook. So, they lost Matt Cutts. There are thousands of folks still signing up.

  • And while we're on the topic of Facebook, it seems that the popular game Farmville is coming to an iPhone near you. I just don't get it myself, but folks are crazy about that game. Soon, fans can be even more rabid about it and take it wherever they go.

And that's a wrap.
