SEO: How Important Is Your Position on Page 1?

on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 | 4 Comments

trafficA new study from the advertising network, Chitika, shows exactly WHY getting a number one ranking on the first page of Google matters and matters a LOT!

Chitika ranked all positions in Google from 1 to 20 and the results are pretty amazing.

A first page, first position rank gets 34.35% of the clicks of the traffic, and it drops pretty rapidly after that. Position three, for example, gets only 11.42%, while position 20 gets a mere 0.29%. So, position on the page becomes very important. More than striving for that elusive page 1, we all need to understand that just being on page 1 isn't the be all and end all of Google SEO. At number 10 on page one, you'll only reap a 2.71% share.

Of course, if we're talking a popular keyword that gets hundred of thousands of searches per day, that 2.71% can really add up, right? That means you need to think not only about the percentages that Chitika is showing us, but also the number of visitors that the page gets in a typical day to decide where you can be comfortable.

But we all want traffic, and as much as we can get.

I think the lesson here is to decide how important that page 1, position 1 listing is for the keyword in question. I think ending up on the bottom of page 1 for a keyword like "golf," for example might be all you need.

So, another factor enters into the keyword research methodology rears its head. What position can you realistically expect to gain and might there be another keyword where you might rank lower on the page but that will bring more traffic, overall?

Something to think about.
