Internet Marketing: Do You Promote Your Content?

on Monday, May 3rd, 2010 | 1 Comment

When new marketers come online, their main concern is: How am I going to make money? And for a lot of them, also included in the thought is … in a hurry.

Don’t let me burst your bubble, but you really can’t make money online in a hurry. If for some strange miracle, you take to pay-per-click marketing like a swan to the lily pond, and you promote a high-converting product that someone else has created, MAYbe you can make money faster. But let’s face it… That would be a miracle. Just figuring out what pay-per-click is and how it works takes more than 24 hours time.

I don’t care what people CLAIM, you need to spend time building a business. You need to learn the mechanisms for building a list and you have to learn the different forms of traffic to drive people to your squeeze page. Then comes the MOST important part… you need to build a relationship with the people you’re attracting.

So, how do you do that?

Clue #1: It’s not by driving them to offers 7 days a week.

Clue #2: It’s not by making one video, writing one article, or posting in a blog once a month.

You need to give the people on your list good content on a consistent basis. I just wrote this very bit of advice to one of our coaching clients. It’s about the good stuff, but it’s also about what people can depend on. You know that if you come to my blog, Sunday through Thursday, most weeks, you’ll have new content to check out. Right? I mean, I’m not perfect. Nobody is, but I really try hard to be consistent.

I know you’re counting on me, and the last thing I want to do is to let anyone down.

I remember when I was first starting out, I signed up for a newsletter called The Hit Exchange News, written by Jon Olson. Jon is an awesome guy, and I remember how much getting that newsletter every Thursday meant to me when I was learning to become an Internet marketer. I expected it in my inbox, and I remember being VERY disappointed when it didn’t arrive. Happily, Jon is a very consistent guy, and this rarely occurred, but my point is that I depended on and looked forward to reading what Jon had to say every single week.

And that’s important. Jon, who didn’t know me at all at the time, became important to me. Because I “knew” him through his newsletter, I wanted to learn more about him. I found out that he ran a forum called the Net Marketing Forum, and I joined. Jon and I became friends. I actually wrote for his newsletter for a short time, and well… Jon was the start of my marketing career. I still give him that credit.

Though I don’t communicate with Jon as often as I did in the past, which is a bummer. We’re just crazy busy people. He’s still a friend, and I still respect what he has to say. When he says that something is cool, I check it out. He helped me to learn the basics of Internet marketing, and I will be forever grateful. It’s a lifelong connection that he made with me.

So, that’s the kind of relationship you need to build with your people. They aren’t going to trust you just because you’re good looking. They aren’t going to trust you because you have a crazy name. They won’t buy things if they don’t think you KNOW what you’re talking about and the only way to establish that trust is by giving them great content.

Do you send your blog posts to your list?

Do you tell your list where to find a great article you’ve written?

Do you give them a cool video that shows them how to do something often?

No? Well… You’d better start. Building this trust in a relationship takes time and effort, and it doesn’t happen overnight.

And aside from building the list, which should be your #1 priority, bonding with your list is #2.
