WordPress: New Plugin Blocks Malicious URL Requests

on Friday, March 5th, 2010 | 4 Comments

There’s a simple new plugin for your WordPress blog that will block malicious URL Requests. It’s simple to install, but you will have to do it the old fashioned way from the plugin site. Here’s where to find the article on the plugin and how to do it here:

I’m guessing that if you read my blog, you’re pretty savvy about adding plugins, but since WordPress has given us the ability to add them right from our blogs for the past several months, you may not know how to handle this. Here’s all you need to do:

  • Open a text editor like Notepad, TextPad or WordPad and paste it into a blank document. (Mac users you know what your text editor is; sorry I don’t.)
  • Save the new document as “blockbadqueries.php”
  • Open your FTP program and upload the file to http://yourdomain.com/public_html/wp-content/plugins (or if you have your blog in a sub-directory, add it to http://yourdomain.com/public_html/subdomain/wp-content/plugins)
  • Go to your blog, log in to your admin area, and in the left nav panel, open Plugins/Installed
  • Navigate to the new plugin and activate it.

Works like mad.

But… if you still want to add it to your blog the easy way, via .zip file. You can grab the zip file here:

http://easyseotricks.com/blockbadqueries.zip

  • Download it to your desktop.
  • Go to your blog and Plugins/Add New/
  • At the top of that page, under the header, you’ll see “Upload.” Click there, and you can navigate to the .zip file on your desktop and allow your blog to unzip the file and install the plugin for you.
  • Activate the plugin as explained above.

Very easy and cool because it will protect your blog. Having been the victim of a nasty hacking, I’m all for that.

[note]However, please NOTE: I did NOT create this plugin.  A smart guy named  Jeff Starr did. Though I did all of the above and is all working well for my blog, your results may vary. I cannot guarantee this plugin, nor can I provide support for it. Please see the above sites for help should you need it.[/note]

I don’t think you will, but I need to cover my buttage. :)
