Open Site Explorer… Time is running out!
I love new tools! And I especially love new tools that give you cool information. It’s important to know how to boost your site in search relevance, and this new tool can help you to do that.
SEOMoz has just come out with “Open Site Explorer,” a “Link Popularity Checker + Backlink Analysis Tool. You feed your domain in and it comes back with some very awesome information.
I plugged in OVBlogger.com because it was my most important site, and since this one is still new (effectively), it gave me no data. I wish there was an easy way to move a site and poof! instantly everything that the old domain had… the new domain gets. And though you do the right things, it’s still another hard row to hoe. Yet, I’m still glad I did it even if it takes another two years to get things back to where I want them.
What was OVBlogger.com anyway? It certainly had nothing to do with SEO and was a product of my newbie days. I should have dropped it immediately when I started becoming more respected online, but it was one of those things… something you KNOW you need to do and it never gets done. Oh well… Bit the bullet, and now, it will take time to rebuild.
Anyway, I got some sweet metrics from this interesting tool. It tells you your domains’ page authority, which SEOMoz says predicts the page’s ranking potential in search engines based on an algorithm. OK… cool. Google was slapping me for a long while for paid linking, so it’s really nice to see where the site showed up anyway… It would be akin to a PR5 or even higher. Meaning? I’m doing something right. OK, reinforcement is good.
It also shows your domain’s authority, how many root domains link to the URL, and the total links pointing to your domain. We have 1,136 which are all being redirected to the new site now with 301 (permanent redirection). Not 10,000, which this tool will spit back, but cool.
This tool also gives you the domains linking, the percentage of follow vs. no-follow links and lots more.
Why is this important?
Knowing that you’re on a path that will improve your search ranking is important. If you go back to a tool and your ranking consistently sucks over a long period, you’re doing something wrong. You need to fix that.
Is it the fact that the links pointing back to your site are “no follow”… Find blogs to comment on that “Do Follow.” Stop wasting time trying to get social bookmarking sites to link back to you, or Twitter, or whatever you’re doing that really doesn’t count.
If you’re doing something right… do more of it. Figure out where your links are coming from, how important those links are and go get more of them.
Stuff like that.
But here’s something else cool… You can compare your site to similar sites in your niche. You can see where their backlinks are coming from and go to those places and get links from them, too. You can get more links so that your site rises higher in the search engines. There are plenty of webmasters out there that haven’t a clue about SEO, and if you’re in a niche that’s not terribly tech oriented, you can KILL in search just by doing some really simple things.
Anyway… I tend to go on and on about stuff like this because it’s exciting for me. So…
Just go and check this awesome SEO tool out now! And hurry… At this time, there are only 40 hours remaining for a free, full access preview. It’s something you might think about paying for, but now… get a test drive and see if your site is moving in the right direction.
This is just one of the cool tools that SEOMoz offers and most of them are free. It’s a great site to register for, if you’re at all interested in SEO. (And no, I’m not getting paid to tell you that.)
Just is.
