Google Search Engine: How are Backlinks Ranked?

Jan 18, 2010
google search engineOK, apparently Matt Cutts is making a whole new series of videos for webmasters about SEO. Sweet! In this video he discusses how Google search engine looks at links pointing back to your site from social sites, and here’s what he says are the criteria:

#1 How reputable are the links? If they’re from Facebook or Twitter, cool. If they’re from a crappy link directory or “farm” as Google likes to call them, you’ll get little to no benefit from having a backlink there.

#2 Google can only give page ranks to crawlable pages. In Facebook, if you have your profile set to “private” it makes crawling impossible. So, if you want great Google search engine credit with from Facebook? … Allow your pages to be public, thus crawable by Google search engine spiders.

#3 Twitter links are all “no follow,” as we discussed before. You get no benefit from having links back to your site on Twitter, except that if you have a popular Twitter presence, people will come. You don’t need Google search engine or any other search engine for that matter. Just be respected for what you’re putting out there and people will come!

#4 All links links are all treated the same as any other links by Google’s search engine algorithm. Links from .edu or .gov have no greater weight than .com or .info.

And that’s basically the gist… Watch Matt’s video to get it all:

Matt says that he won’t be making a blog post every time they make a new video about how Google search engine works, and if you want to be in on all the news… follow: @googlewmcon Twitter. I did… you should, too. :)

  • Hi Pat,

Dead on with the link juice. Sometimes I'm amazed at what people will put out in forums and other places.

Really, some quite unbelievable stuff.... anything to get a link from a forum :)

It's difficult to keep people straight.

    Thanks again for "link juice"

You got it, my friend! I love having "do follow" links, since it's only fair. Share the wealth. When you allow some of your Page Rank to flow, it doesn't hurt yours a bit (unless, of course, you're linking to bad neighborhoods). So, why not? Let the spam filter catch the cheaters, and give the people adding value to your blog a boost.
  • Every time I open a file such as My Documents, or My pictures, a google search engine page also pops up. How do I stop this from happening? thanks..

Hmm... That's strange. Think you picked up a virus? I'd scan my system to see.
