Search Wars

Bing is really heating up and people around the tech world are seeming to give it props whenever possible. Today, over at Tech Crunch, I was reading an article about the Times Square bomb scare in New York City. The terrorism thing has every holiday traveler a little wary right now, and with the New Year’s celebration coming up, something like that is news!

Erick Schonfeld reported that Bing had the story at least 15 minutes before Google. Well… guess what? Unless personalized search is already kicking in (which it may well be), I’m still not seeing the story at the top of search results in the “news” area. Check this out:

Still no mention of the bomb scare. (Which was bogus, BTW, in case you’re wondering.)

But here’s Bing:

So, there it is, bold and on top. And notice the time stamp on this post. This is like 5:50 p.m. Eastern.

This was a pretty big news story today. All of the major networks reported on it, so what’s the deal? Could it be that Bing has the jump on Google? At least in this instance it does seem to be the case.

I have to be honest. I still use Google more than any other engine, but Bing is kicking ass and taking names on this one, and everyone on line is beginning to notice. Will it overshadow Google? Probably not in the near future, but it’s an engine worth trying. In fact, I’m going to change my default search for a day or so and see how well I’m liking the results. I’ll let you know.
